A Very Good Journey (for Leonard Cohen)

by Tamsin Smith

& that was that was that

the first and only rule

don’t leave

before looking to the sea

shore stretched weary

call your soul-flared

lighthouse home

to the island of springs

& ancient astronomy

making very good

use of water planting

tears to tear tears away

away with you then

all your messages

came through

a line of love has dropped

in dimming surrender

the barbarians of our nature

have arrived

it’s almost too much

time to set out

be not afraid

fresh joys

& laurel branches

await

faded hero

farewell
